House Atlantis
Named after the fabled lost continent of Atlantis and designed by Bernhard Hoetger in 1930/31, this house was intended to reflect the legendary utopia. Originally built from glass, wood, and reinforced concrete in geometric shapes, and decorated in the Art Déco style, the house held a lecture hall, reading room, exhibition space, and clubrooms. During World War II, the artistic facade was destroyed by fire. In 1965 the façade underwent a total redesign in brick by Ewald Mataré.
In 1988 House Atlantis was separated from the Böttcherstrasse ensemble, and sold.
The new owner, the Swedish hotel group Scandic, integrated House Atlantis into
a new hotel built adjacent to the original building, and carried out a comprehensive refurbishment. To a great extent, the stairway and the Himmelssaal (shown on the photo) - some of the most interesting examples of German architecture from between the wars - are original.
Today House Atlantis is a part of the Hilton Bremen.
