Roselius-House
The foundation walls of this, the oldest house on the street, probably date back to the 14th century (with the initial building completed in 1588). In 1902 Böttcherstrasse 6 - not only the oldest but also the most beautiful house, and located in the center of the street - was purchased by Ludwig Roselius.
He first used the house as the main office for his company Roselius & Co., which in 1906 developed into Kaffee HAG (Kaffee Handels Aktien Gesellschaft). The house was renovated in 1928, in the manner of a Bremen merchant’s house of the day, in order to hold Roselius’s extensive art collection. It was then that the house was given its distinctive stairway gable and renamed Roselius House.
In 1944 Roselius House was destroyed, and only the facade remained standing. It was demolished in 1947.
In 1954 the house was reconstructed according to historic plans as a museum. Today the collections on display in Roselius House are part of the art collections Kunstsammlungen Böttcherstraße.
