Reconstruction in 1949
Thirteen years after its completion, a large part of the street and its houses went up in flames, and was otherwise destroyed in October 1944. Reconstruction of the Böttcherstrasse commenced in 1949 and continued until 1954. Building facades were able to be reconstructed with few changes; however, the interiors by Hoetger and Scotland & Runge were, with few exceptions, totalled. At the time, the reconstruction of the Böttcherstrasse by Kaffee HAG was one of the most significant private reconstruction undertakings in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Thirty-five years after the post-war reconstruction, extensive structural damage was detected in the buildings on Böttcherstrasse. In 1988 the German bank Sparkasse Bremen purchased the street, its land and the buildings (with the exception of House Atlantis). Comprehensive restoration measures were then undertaken and completed in 1999.
Since 2003 the houses on Böttcherstrasse have been owned by Stiftung Bremer Sparer Dank, the foundation that now ensures that this architectural treasure will remain for all to see.
